Western Digital has officially unveiled the WD Blue® SN5100, a new NVMe SSD aimed squarely at creators, professionals, and anyone looking to accelerate demanding AI-powered workflows and content creation projects. As a PCIe® 4.0 drive, it promises a performance uplift of around 30% over its predecessor, delivering a significant boost in efficiency for editing, rendering, and transferring high-resolution videos, images, and other large files.
Under the hood, the WD Blue® SN5100 leverages SanDisk® BiCS8 QLC NAND flash, a technology well-suited for professional tasks involving 4K or 8K video and massive project folders. Whether you're upgrading an existing system or building a new workstation from scratch, this drive is designed to enable faster creation, store more data, and handle multitasking with greater ease. For peace of mind, the drive is backed by a five-year limited warranty.
Diving into the key features, the performance of the 1TB and 2TB models stands out, boasting sequential read speeds of up to 7,100 MB/s. This is achieved by pairing the new BiCS8 QLC 3D NAND with what WD calls "CMOS Bonded to Array" (CBA) technology. To minimize wait times, the drive also incorporates SanDisk's® nCache™ 4.0 technology, which is engineered to improve application responsiveness and boost copy performance for large files and project directories.
To ensure ample space for even the largest projects, the SN5100 will be available in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities at launch. A higher-capacity 4TB version is also slated for release, with an expected arrival in October.
