NVIDIA scraps RTX 4080 12GB

In a bizarre move, NVIDIA decided to cancel the RTX 4080 12GB SKU before it was even released.

Facing never-ending criticism, NVIDIA has just announced it will not launch GeForce RTX 4080 12GB model, the card that we knew and will always know as RTX 4070. In a last-minute change in September, the company had decided to launch two RTX 4080 models with vastly different specifications. Turns out this has backfired hard.
NVIDIA has just announced it is ‘unlaunching’ its RTX 4080 12GB GPU. Only the 16GB model will be released. Furthermore, NVIDIA confirmed the only true RTX 4080 with 16GB memory launches on November 16th.

With the launch of its flagship RTX 4090 NVIDIA released new performance graphs featuring its upcoming RTX 40 series. It confirmed that there is a staggering 30% performance gap between both models. NVIDIA is known for launching many SKUs similar names (think RTX/GTX x60 class), but such a large gap is uncommon, even for NVIDIA.
The company could now release the same card as RTX 4070 Ti or RTX 4070 which would make a lot more sense. Hopefully, this also means NVIDIA will announce better pricing as well.
