ASRock as one of the leading manufacturers, released a long list of interesting Z590 motherboards. I hope we will be able to show you most of them, while today we will focus on the model from one of the most popular series – Z590 Extreme.
The new Extreme model promises exceptional performance and amazing results at a reasonable price. This review should tell you a lot about the Z590 Extreme as we will check a long list of features and overclocking potential with the i7-11700K CPU. ASRock Z590 Extreme motherboard arrived in a retail package which is well described as all ASRock motherboards. The new Extreme series motherboard has a slightly different design than previous motherboards and we can clearly see it looking at the package. As far as it still has a dark theme, then we can see a mix of blue, and purple colors which are suggesting RGB illumination. This is also the first motherboard that has in its name only Extreme word without numbers 4 or 6.
We will find a well-protected motherboard, user’s manual, graphics card holder, drivers and software DVD, SATA data cables, cable stripes, ASRock logo sticker, and M.2 screws inside the box.
The motherboard looks minimalistic, as ASRock advertises, but also fresh and stylish. Everything is rather simple except the EXTREME sign which is actually a semi-transparent PCB with RGB LEDs under it. Everything gives a feeling of a high-end product, even though it’s one of the least expensive Z590 motherboards on the market.
The motherboard has no additional fans, but because of large heatsinks, there are no problems with cooling. Heatsinks have a new texture and parts with semi-transparent plastic covers which are hiding RGB lighting. On the whole test rig photos, you can see hidden ASRock and Extreme signs which look exceptional.
The motherboard has a 14-power phase design, so the same as previously reviewed motherboards from the Extreme and Velocita series. It’s enough to support top series processors. Since the 11th generation of Intel processors stops at 8 cores then we can be sure it will be enough even for higher overclocking. Looking at our results I can say that the only problem may cause the heat generated by these new processors, and if you won’t be able to overclock your CPU then it will be because of your CPU cooler.
I’m glad to see Realtek Dragon 2.5Gb NIC on the Z590 Extreme. Most higher series motherboards are equipped with Intel 2.5Gb NIC which is still sometimes causing problems or works at lower than expected bandwidth. There is no problem with Realtec NIC. In our tests, we could reach nearly 2.5Gbps bandwidth.
The Z590 Extreme supports up to 128GB RAM in four 32GB memory modules. There are no problems with such high capacity up to at least DDR4-3600 but with high-quality modules, it should work even higher. I’m not sure if anyone will ever use so much RAM on this motherboard as I assume that mainly gamers will be interested in this product and most gamers will stop at 16GB or 32GB RAM.
I like what ASRock did with the RGB illumination. The motherboard isn’t too flashy but still has a nice backlight. RGB illumination is in the chipset cover and I/O cover, but also on the whole right side of the motherboard, just next to the semi-transparent EXTREME sign.
Below are some photos of the working setup. The motherboard supports various cooler and RAM products, so there shouldn’t be any problems with all popular brands. In our case, it’s HyperX Predator RAM and Raijintek EOS cooler. You can also see the ASRock RX6800XT Phantom Gaming graphics card which is perfectly synchronized with the motherboard.
One more great feature is ASRock’s BIOS/UEFI, which I will describe on this review’s next page.
BIOS/UEFI and Software
ASRock BIOS/UEFI is already well-known, and we were presenting it in many previous reviews, so I think I don’t have to explain much. The BIOS/UEFI itself is easy to manage. Everything is clear, and some options have an additional description. Everything that could be dangerous for the hardware is also marked, so less advanced users are being warned.
The motherboard has easy and advanced modes so if you don’t feel good in various motherboard settings then just stay on the main, easy page. Those who want to play with additional settings can also notice there are OC and stable profiles. The stable profile will limit voltages to their maximum recommended values.
Let’s take a look at BIOS/UEFI windows and available options.
Main – EZ Mode / Advanced Mode
In the BIOS/UEFI, we can find everything required for monitoring and overclocking. There are also additional tabs with more advanced settings that enthusiasts and overclockers can use for additional performance gain. All other users can configure additional devices or functionality like RAID modes. There is simply everything you may need, and for most users, there is even too much.
ASRock delivers a similar software with the Extreme series motherboards as we could see in the previously reviewed AMD and Intel motherboards. There is A-Tuning, Dragon LAN, and Polychrome Sync software. Everything is well-known and helps in adjusting RGB illumination, optimize LAN speed and overclock PC components. There is also hardware monitoring and fan tuning.
Now it’s time for some tests, so we are moving to the next page.
Performance – Part 1
All tests were performed on the ASRock Z590 Extreme motherboard, Intel i7-11700K processor, ASRock RX6800 XT Phantom Gaming graphics card, 16GB HyperX Predator DDR4-4600 CL19 memory kit, Crucial P5 PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 SSD on which was installed Windows 10 and Silicon Power US70 PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD for additional tests. Everything else will be mentioned during the tests.
The motherboard has no problem handling memory up to DDR4-5200. The specification says about DDR4-4800 as its maximum speed so we are already happy with the results.
For optimal performance at a higher memory frequency, we have to enable Gear 2 in BIOS. Then our RAM will fly at over 65GB/s and low latency of around 50ns.
Above you can see our results at nothing but the XMP profile of HyperX Predator RAM. It’s a clear improvement over the last generation of Intel processors but requires a motherboard with mentioned Gear 2 option in BIOS to enjoy the optimal performance at a higher memory frequency.
Processor performance and mixed load tests
Both, 7-Zip and Cinebench R23 are quite demanding tests and use AVX instructions so are loading the CPU to its limits. In both cases, our results are about as high as expected.
PCMark results are essential as they show how all components work with each other in a mixed load environment. It can be translated into regular daily work, so what we all do and expect good results. The Z590 Extreme performs well in this test. All results are high for our test platform.
Performance – Part 2
M.2 SSD performance has been tested using Silicon Power US70 1TB SSD. Our maximum bandwidth is as high as the rated speed of the US70 SSD. On the other hand, we have seen better results on the B550 PG Velocita which so far was performing the best in this benchmark with exactly the same SSD.
PCMark 10 Storage tests are already as high as expected. These tests are showing about the same results each run what also shows the stability of the test platform.
USB 3.2 performance has been tested using Patriot PXD 1TB SSD. This is about the maximum bandwidth possible on our external SSD.
Local network performance has been tested using the ASRock X299 Creator motherboard with the 10G LAN controller as a data server and Netgear XS505M 10G switch. At the same time, other devices were connected to the network to simulate a typical daily workload.
The above result shows a 1Gb LAN connection while the below shows a 2.5Gb LAN connection. In both cases, we could see results close to the maximum bandwidth while the average was around 15% lower. This is typical when other applications and services are using the local network.

3D performance and games
3D tests were performed on the RX6800XT graphics card from ASRock, which is one of the fastest options on the market right now. All results in 3D tests and games are exceptional and should satisfy even the most demanding gamers.
Above is a result of the Final Fantasy XV Benchmark, while below, you can look at our results in 3DMarks and VRMarks.
All UL benchmarks are showing some excellent scores for our setup. There are no problems with stability or performance.
Below are some Superposition benchmark results at high display resolutions and the most popular 1080p at high details. It can’t be any different, so again, some exceptional results.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is showing CPU and GPU access time what is interesting as not many benchmarks present these results. Everything seems just perfect.
2560×1440 display resolution is more CPU bound in the Tomb Raider series. It still seems optimal for gaming but our test rig clearly can handle the 4K.

CPU overclocking is clearly limited by the used CPU and even more by its heat. Even though we were using an AIO cooler with a 360mm radiator, then we couldn’t stabilize our i7-11700K at all cores, at more than 4.8GHz. This was the limit without turning off AVX instructions. Once we disable AVX-512 and set more strict limits for AVX, then we can pass 5GHz
The motherboard clearly can work with the CPU above 300W but it’s hard to keep it below the throttling point. Optimal in our case was any setting with the CPU at about 260-270W so mentioned 4.8GHz at all cores with all instructions enabled and without any limits, or 5.0-5.1GHz with slightly lower voltages and disabled AVX-512.
More fun we can have while overclocking RAM. Our HyperX Predator 2x8GB DDR4-4600 CL19-26-26 memory kit could reach DDR4-5200 at CL21-27-27 and 1.60V. We could say it’s high voltage but the memory kit comes with a 1.50V XMP profile and motherboard QVL include memory kits up to 1.65V with the same Hynix DJR memory IC. It’s also the first platform that shows so good results at relaxed memory timings.
ASRock Z590 Extreme still has early BIOS, even though stable. I assume we will see even more optimized BIOS in a couple of weeks. The motherboard clearly has overclocking potential and is worth recommending to users who expect good results at a reasonable price.
Our results are higher than most users will even try to set. This proves that the B550 Extreme4 is a solid platform for all users, even overclockers. For sure, gamers will have a lot of fun with this motherboard as it perfectly meets their needs and is cheaper than some other models with similar specifications and features.
Conclusion and Verdict
ASRock Z590 Extreme delivers everything that most gamers need. It’s fast, stable, offers compatibility with a wide range of devices, supports RGB and ARGB illumination standards, and overclocks well. Its name can be a bit misleading as it’s not really an extreme motherboard but still really solid and may give a lot of fun to its users. Those who are searching for something really extreme, have to wait some more for the OC Formula which was just announced.
The Z590 Extreme passed all our tests without issues. The performance was excellent, and there were no problems with stability. The motherboard has a strong power design and supports all available processors for the LGA1200. It also supports memory kits up to DDR4-4800 and as we could test, handles also DDR4-5200.
The Z590 Extreme gives us a set of essential features and something special for more demanding users. In the end, we can enjoy a well-designed motherboard at a reasonable price which can compete with more expensive motherboards. This is what most gamers are searching for.
ASRock Z590 Extreme motherboard costs around £228 in the Amazon UK store. Other stores should have it available soon at a slightly lower price. In the Europe version with WiFi won’t be available, while there is still a dedicated M.2 socket which we can use for the latest WiFi 6E controller.
