So we have a new 11900K in front of us today and there is still a level of excitement when something new arrives even if it raises the question why? What do I mean by that? Well we are getting a new processor from Intel that is better than the last gen but fails in comparison to the competition. By now you have probably seen those day one reviews and have seen what I am talking about. Yes this 11th gen by no means flipped the charts but it has done what it was intended to do. Intel had a choice to make either wait and release a new nm process later or release what we have now just to stay in the race. We can all agree this has to be the last we see of the 14nm process. I mean that fact that they were able to take this process this far is something, right? I would say its an achievement to be able to squeeze every ounce out of something. And that’s what they did. There really isn’t any head room left for overclocking on this generation. They pull a lot of power and in turn are going to run hot when they are pushed. And at the time of this review we are already seeing stuff about the 12th gen come out. Possibly see them in our hands in the 4th quarter of this year. So this generation may not be in the wheel house for very long. With all that being said I am actually happy that Intel didn’t wait and released this. They almost had no choice. The gaming performance of these chips are still very competitive and even can out perform the competitor in some titles. But when it comes to raw processing power it will have to hand over that top spot. I don’t consider myself a fan boy of either of the chip makers. I just want a solid price/performance ratio and I would go with either.

For our test rig we paired the card with an Intel i9 11900K (Rocket Lake), Gigabyte Z590 VISION G motherboard and 16GB of Aorus RGB DDR4-4800 memory (unless noted otherwise). All tests are conducted using default speeds on CPU, Card, and RAM unless noted otherwise

Benchmarks (Part 2)

We would like to thank Futuremark for providing the 3DMark software for use in this testing.

3DMark is arguably the most popular graphics card benchmarking software known to the world. For more than a decade, users have been using the software made by Futuremark to make and break world records and to also test overclocks. The latest version simply known as 3DMark includes several tests for DirectX 9, 10, 11 and 12 hardware. This version also supports cross-platform benchmarking including smartphones and tablets (Android and iOS) this time around. We used the Fire Strike Ultra, and Time Spy benchmarks (all at default settings). I will let the numbers do the talking.

 

Time Spy

3DMark Time Spy is a new DirectX 12 benchmark test for Windows 10 gaming PCs. Time Spy is one of the first DirectX 12 apps to be built “the right way” from the ground up to fully realize the performance gains that the new API offers. Cinebench

CINEBENCH is a real-world cross platform test suite that evaluates your computer’s performance capabilities. CINEBENCH is based on MAXON’s award-winning animation software Cinema 4D, which is used extensively by studios and production houses worldwide for 3D content creation. MAXON software has been used in blockbuster movies such as Iron Man 3, Oblivion, Life of Pi or Prometheus and many more. ATTO Disk Benchmark

ATTO has created a widely-accepted Disk Benchmark freeware software to help measure storage system performance. As one of the top tools utilized in the industry, Disk Benchmark identifies performance in hard drives, solid state drives, RAID arrays as well as the host connection to attached storage.

CrystalDiskMark

CrystalDiskMark is a disk benchmark software.It measure sequential reads/writes speed,measure random 512KB, 4KB, 4KB (Queue Depth=32) reads/writes speed, select test data (Random, 0Fill, 1Fill), provide theme support and Multi-Language support.

OVERCLOCKING PERFORMANCE

CPU

I was able to hit an easy 5.0Ghz on all cores with ease and the temps were pretty high while running Cinebench20. I will note 5.1 was not stable with 1.4v and half the time it would go into a boot loop. And the temps at 5.0GHz speak for themselves.

RAM (OC)

Better than my results with the Z490 but still a no go when simply trying to use the 4800MHz XMP profile. I had to enable XMP, manually change to 4600 and then set VCCIO to 1.3v, System Agent Voltage to 1.5v, and set the RAM Voltage to 1.5. If I waivered from those values what so ever it would not boot. And because this board has no CMOS button, shorting the jumper became no fun, fast.

Benchmarks

The gaming benchmarks were almost negligible when I was overclocked. The CPU score was higher but the gaming overall scores were not really impacted.

The Cinebench20 score was higher at 6149 vs a 5814 vs stock settings.

Verdict and Conclusion

So we have come to the conclusion of the review. Now to further explore the questions around this gen. Lets say Intel waited and released something later on a new nm process. What does tell us about keeping a foot in the race? Well simply that means you took an exit and had to go in for repairs. This would be the worst thing that could of happened for us as consumers. That would have shifted the weights so much that it could of cause the other brand to relax, allowing them to put it on cruise control and in turn we wouldn’t be getting the best out of both companies. We as consumers want all companies trying to out perform each other.

Healthy competition benefits us. The 11th gen processors have taken the 14nm process to the max. I don’t foresee the 14nm process continuing past this generation. I hope not anyways, and from what I keep seeing we should be on a new 10nm on the next gen. The performance is still great on the 11th gen but is far from taking the top spot. These are still very viable and compete very well in gaming titles. The lack of core do hurt this processor when it comes down to multi-core workloads. That performance just isn’t going to be there without them. I was able to put an all core 5.1MHz on this processor but the temps went to the max instantly. And that was with an AIO. I am not going to complain to much because the 11th gen is hands down better that the 10th gen.

One thing not to forget is the fact that the 11900K chips do have graphics. And this is noteworthy because we all know of the insane shortages we have. You may not be able to game at 4k but if you are waiting for a graphics card to arrive you will still at least have video.

 

Final words:

The Intel Core i9 11900K kept Intel in the competition zone. The performance is better than the previous gen and is still capable of providing enough processing power for your games and work.
