AMD Ryzen 7000 with memory improvements

Some interesting details on next-gen AMD desktop platform have just been confirmed.

The DDR5 memory optimizations for desktop Ryzen 7000 series codenamed “Raphael” have been revealed by a leaked Gigabyte BIOS for X670E motherboards, supposedly based on AGESA 1.0.0.1. Some enthusiasts, including the creator of HYDRA/CTR tuning tools for Ryzen CPUs, were quick to analyze the data hidden in the firmware. This data confirmed the following.

Although this wasn’t part of the Ryzen 7000 reveal earlier this month, the BIOS confirms AMD EXPO technology (EXtended Profiles for Overclocking). Which is AMD’s alternative to Intel XMP 3.0 for DDR5 memory. We mentioned that AMD is working on such technology in April this year. The new leak also confirms that EXPO will support two main profiles either focusing on bandwidth or low latency.

Users will be allowed to modify active memory timings for each of the four DDR5 channels, but the most interesting details is the maximum frequency of Infinity Fabric, reportedly up to 3000 MHz. However, do note that this is just the option in the BIOS, not necessarily an achievable frequency.

The X670E motherboard from Gigabyte is to offer the following memory timing options:

Dram ODT impedance RTT_NOM_WR

Dram ODT impedance RTT_NOM_RD

Dram ODT impedance RTT_WR

Dram ODT impedance RTT_PARK

Dram ODT impedance DQS_RTT_PARK

Furthermore, there is also a rumor from Wccftech who claim to have received information on the DDR5 memory ‘sweet spot’ for AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs. It is alleged that DDR5-6000 should offer the best performance, supposedly in 1:1 ratio with Infinity Fabric frequency. Any faster memory module will likely require this ratio to be changed to 1:2, but a claim is made that such setting will provide poor results, and it is simply not recommended for gaming.

AMD Ryzen 7000 series are now set to launch on September 15th. It is expected that high-speed memory modules should also become popular in the next few weeks, just as AMD and Intel fully deploy their new platforms.
