On our test bench, today is the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING (12G-P5-3967-KL) video card. Among the seven RTX 3080 Ti cards that EVGA offers, the FTW3 ULTRA GAMING sports the fastest factory overclock that EVGA currently offers on the RTX 3080 Ti GPU. It is equipped with EVGA’s iCX3 cooling solution which includes three fans.

Over the past couple of weeks, the market conditions for RTX 30 Series GPUs have vastly improved, especially for the 3070 Ti, 3080 10GB, 3080 12GB, and 3080 Ti variants. We have been seeing this card go in and out of stock on EVGA’s website at $1429.99 as well as at other retailers. Unlike the last 2 years of reviews we’ve written, you’ve actually got a chance at buying this one.

In order to see where this GPU stands, we will compare it to the EVGA RTX 3080 10GB FTW3 ULTRA GAMING, the EVGA GEFORCE RTX 3080 12GB FTW3 ULTRA GAMING, and the ASUS TUF 6800 XT OC Edition.

EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING (12G-P5-3967-KL)

The EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING comes in a regulation-size video card box that identifies it as an RTX 3080 12GB FTW ULTRA model from EVGA. Once we cracked open the box, we found a black-clad GPU with silver-ish trim sporting three fans and a solid metal backplate. As you can see, the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING is indistinguishable from the EVGA GEFORCE RTX 3080 12GB FTW3 ULTRA GAMING aside from the top lettering indicating the GPU type (not seen above).
Specifications

EVGA has given the GeForce RTX 3080 12GB FTW3 ULTRA GAMING a factory overclock of 135MHz on the boost clock, bringing it from the stock 1665MHz up to 1800MHz. Keep in mind that the boost clock is a target based on power, workload, and temperature and that value will typically be exceeded via the card’s boosting algorithm NVIDIA GPU Boost. It also sports 12GB of 19GHz GDDR6X memory that is equal in speed to the reference specifications. EVGA offers a 350W TGP on the card.

From a size perspective, it’s a large size card that’s no different in size than the other high-end 30 Series FTW3 cards from EVGA. Specifically, it is 11.8 inches long, 5.38 inches tall and 2.75 slots wide. For additional comparison, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders edition’s length is 11.2 inches long, 4.4 inches tall and 2 slots wide, so the EVGA video card is six-tenths of an inch long, 1 inch taller, and three-quarters of a slot wider.
EVGA iCX3 Cooling

EVGA is utilizing its iCX3 cooling setup that consists of 3 HDB 2.0 noise motor fans with fan blades that have raised “E”s on them to reduce noise. The fans feature an asynchronous fan mode and will switch off when temperatures are under 55 degrees Celsius. The PCB features cutouts (along with the backplate having cutouts) to improve airflow and reduce exhaust recovery. EVGA claims a 5.1% improvement over the iCX2 cooling system while being 9.7% quieter.
Pictures and Information

The front of the card features three HDB 2.0 and silver trim along the top that lights up with RGB goodness. It’s a full two and three-quarters PCI-e slots wide and sports three Display Port 1.4a connections and one HDMI 2.0 connection.

The EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING is equipped with a backplate to help further the distribution of heat.

The video card requires three 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors. EVGA recommends a 750W Power Supply, so this is a beefy power requirement for this video card.

Video Card Comparison

We are comparing the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING to the EVGA RTX 3080 10GB FTW3 ULTRA GAMING, the EVGA GEFORCE RTX 3080 12GB FTW3 ULTRA GAMING, and the ASUS TUF 6800 XT OC Edition.

How do you overclock an EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING video card?

Before we begin to overclock, we need to find out the real-world in-game GPU frequency the video card is operating at by default. That way we can find what frequency we are overclocking from and how much gain we get in overclocking. Keep in mind that NVIDIA GPU Boost already adjusts the GPU frequency dynamically to utilize most of the potential that is there. This means it will already clock the GPU frequency well above the quoted Boost Clock even without overclocking.

Default Clock

The base clock on this video card is 1360MHz, which isn’t very helpful. More importantly, it is the GPU Boost Clock that makes the difference and it is set at 1800MHz on the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING. This is 135MHz higher than the NVIDIA listed stock GPU Boost of 1665MHz.

The EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING settled in between 1860MHz and 1875MHz during testing and maintained a temperature of 78.3 degrees Celsius. Compared to the RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition which averaged 1804MHz, the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING declares victory over the Founders Edition by about 56-71MHz. Memory in both the 12GB Founders Edition and the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING is set to 19GHz using GDDR6X memory.
Highest Stable Overclock

To dial in the maximum overclock for the EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING, we used EVGA’s Precision X1 software that makes lots of knobs to turn and levers to pull available for tuning enjoyment.

We started by maxing out the Power Target at 111% and boosted the GPU Temp Target up from 83C to 91C. We then cranked the fans up to 100%. There was not a knob present for modifying voltage, however, given the low power budgets on the RTX 30 Series that we have seen so far, adding voltage has not been necessary as it only increases power consumption and reduces how far GPU Boost will push the core clock speed up.

With the power matters settled, we started by pushing the core clock up as high as it could go without touching the memory side of the equation. We were able to pick up an extra 160 MHz on the slider offset before we started crashing.

Next up, we set the core back to stock and boosted the memory to see how far we could take it. It appeared to be happiest at +1400MHz (2800MHz effective). This is a boost to 21.8GHz GDDR 6X over the stock of 19GHz GDDR6X.

Putting it all together, we first tried our max individual clocks together to see how it worked. This gave us a final stable overclock of 1525MHz core clock, 1960MHz boost clock, and 21.8GHz memory clock.

Comparing the sustained GPU frequency to the stock frequency, we see that the observed overclocked frequency bounced between 2040 and 2055MHz. This is an 9.7% increase over the stock clocks and a 13% boost over the stock Founders Edition performance. The memory at 21.8GHz is 14.7% faster than the stock clock as well.
